Records of "Following the Sun and Moon: Hopi Kachina Dolls," an exhibition mounted by the Heard Museum from January 1995 through September 1996 with an accompanying catalogue. Hopi Kachina dolls, or thius, are carved figures representing (Hopi) Kachina spirits. The Kachina ceremonies of the Hopi people take place between January and July, and their prime function is to assist in the prayers for rain. During specific ceremonies, Kachina dolls are given to young girls from the Kachina spirits. The dolls in this collection date from the late nineteenth century. Many of the photographs include early and recent carvings of the same Kachina. The exhibition was curated by Gloria Lomahaftewa. Catalogue text by Alf Secakuku and exhibition catalogue design by Lisa MacCollum.
